How to set up a seller account on Amazon? What do you need to get it started?

23 Nov 2018

Before starting the process of setting up a selling account in Amazon Seller Central, gather the required documents to smoothly go through the registration process.

The things you need to set up a selling account on Amazon are:

Credit Card

Scan of an ID card / passport

Proof of address for the person managing the account

Phone number

Company VAT number

Bank account number.

The credit card is required when registering an Amazon Seller Account.

A credit card is required during the registration process. However, you do not need a card issued in the name of the company for which the selling account will be set up. It is important that the card is valid and allows for online payments. The card will be charged the fees for the Amazon account. Currently, the fee for using the Amazon account is 39 EUR per month (net amount) for a Professional account. After full account registration and assigning a bank account, you can change the payment method from Amazon to a bank account, thus removing the credit card information from your Amazon account.

TIP: By default, new accounts are registered as Professional. If you are registering an account but do not yet have products ready and it may take you weeks/months, you can downgrade your account to Amazon Individual and in this way, you will not pay a fixed monthly fee.

Confirmation of the identity of the seller on Amazon - ID card / passport.

When setting up an account, it is necessary to provide information about the person who is the owner or shareholder of the company in the case of partnerships and/or the person managing the account. In addition to personal data such as address, nationality, and date of birth, you must also provide the type, number of the identification document, and its expiry date.

After registering your account and providing this data, you will be asked to upload a scan of the document. Scan the ID card in such a way that both sides are visible and they are in one file of good quality. If you are scanning a passport, a scan of the page with the photo is required. In the image below, you can find additional requirements regarding the scans of documents.

Confirm the data of the person managing the Amazon account.

You are required to verify the information regarding the main person managing the account, that is, "Primary Contact Person Information". To do this, you must provide Amazon, through the Seller Central panel, a scan of a so-called "utility bill." This can be a bill for electricity, water, gas, or phone. It is important that the bill is not older than 3 months and the data on it matches the details of the person managing the account provided earlier, including their first name, last name, and address. This information is verified automatically, so it is essential that the file is of good quality and readable by the machine. The best format is .pdf files. You will only be asked for this data after activation; however, it is necessary for the Amazon account to be fully activated.

You must have and provide a mobile phone number. This number will primarily be used to enable two-step verification of the account. An activation code will be sent to the number provided during account registration, which must be entered in the designated field, which is equivalent to verifying this number as the number associated with the main account. The phone number is used as the main contact and verification number when logging in, although it can be changed at a later stage of account management.

Company VAT number.

Simply opening an Amazon account does not require you to provide a VAT number, but it is required for the full activation of your Amazon account. After gaining access to the seller account, go to Settings -> Account Info -> VAT information and -> Add a VAT/GST registration number and enter your VAT number without dashes. After adding, it will have the status "Pending Verification," and after a few days, it will be finally confirmed. This is a required piece of data for the full activation of your Amazon account.

Bank account number.

In the "Settings" section, you are required to provide your bank account number to which the funds from your sales will be transferred via the platform. This can be a Polish account, but remember that in this option, Amazon will convert the transfer from euros or pounds to zloty. Unfortunately, having a currency account in the specified currency at a Polish bank will not protect us from conversion since Amazon does not recognize the type of bank account from its number alone, and as a default setting, the funds transferred are converted. The best solution is to have an account in a bank from one of the Eurozone countries for payment of funds in euros and a British account for payment of funds in British pounds.

Ensure you have all this information before deciding to register an account and begin successful selling on Amazon.
