How to sell products on Amazon without a barcode?
5 Aug 2021
Do you want to offer products on Amazon without an identifier?
Amazon requires providing an EAN, UPC or GTIN code when creating new listings. This standard allows distinguishing goods around the world. But what should you do if your product does not have such a designation? Check when you can apply for permission to sell without a barcode.
What is GTIN?
GTIN is a universal number assigned to a product. Each variant (e.g., colour, size) should have its own code. This makes it easier to manage inventory, shipments and build the credibility of your offer. Some products do not have identifiers, for example:
works of art,
gift sets,
handcrafted items.
How to apply for an exemption?
First, check if the product already exists in Amazon's offer – if so, you need to connect to the existing listing.
If the product is not available, in Seller Central choose the category and brand/publisher.
Click “Check for Eligibility” – the system will inform you whether you can apply for an exemption.
Attach the product name and at least two photos (product and packaging with a visible brand) to the application.
Amazon's responses will appear in the Case log.
Requirements to obtain a GTIN exemption:
the product must be new on Amazon,
it must not come from the list of brands requiring a code,
photos must be authentic, preferably amateur, showing the product in hand or on a table.
If the application is accepted, after about 24 hours you can list your offer without a code.
Alternative – purchase codes
Instead of applying for an exemption, you can buy GTIN/EAN codes from official registries. Company data (REGON, contact), number of products and registration fee are required. The process usually takes several days.
If you are wondering what is better – purchasing codes or applying for an exemption – it is worth consulting with experts who can help you launch your offer.
