The devil is not as scary as he is painted, or how to conduct an interesting onboarding without a hint of boredom.

10 Jan 2023

At Go2Market, we focus not only on expanding our Amazon horizons but also our team. For several months, we have been working on the onboarding process for new employees, so they can understand the Go2Market structures, tools, and the atmosphere that prevails in our "virtual" halls. Why "virtual"? Because Go2Market operates entirely remotely! With this in mind, we created an onboarding process fully adapted to working from home, allowing new employees time and space for any questions and doubts that may arise, as well as sharing observations and conclusions. We present everything in an easy, accessible manner, without incomprehensible jargon, and always available to new Go2Market team members is a Buddy - a friend who watches over them, always offers help, and ensures that the onboarding is smooth and comfortable. Check below how to implement engaging onboarding for new employees at your company, conducted entirely online.

On board, welcome aboard. What is onboarding?

Although the English word onboarding has no direct equivalent in Polish, it is accepted that we refer to the process of integrating an employee into work. It typically lasts a few days or weeks, during which time the new employee learns the structures they will work within, the tools they will use, how processes work in their new workplace, and what their job will look like in that position.

The main tasks of onboarding are not only the formalities and introducing the employee to the environment they will now be working in but also the first impression. In this case, we are talking about the first impressions of the company that accompany the employee from the very beginning of their work. Even during onboarding, bonds are formed between the employee and the company as well as other employees. For the bond to be stronger, a well-thought-out approach to onboarding is essential. Therefore, remember to put yourself in the employees' shoes when planning onboarding, to consider how to interestingly introduce them to your company in a way that builds long-term relationships. See what onboarding idea we came up with at Go2Market and discover that remote work can be engaging.

Onboarding doesn’t have to be boring at all

Do you remember your first days in other companies? How did you feel at that time? What atmosphere surrounded your onboarding, and were you not overwhelmed by a large amount of new material to absorb right from the start? Here, it is completely different because we realise that knowledge is best absorbed in practice, which is why we don’t combine general onboarding with purely position-specific onboarding; we don’t overwhelm with materials but give time and space for getting to know each other, conversations, and questions. When preparing the onboarding plan at Go2Market, we were primarily guided by our own experiences. A significant aspect for us was to meet the expectations of future employees or, better yet, positively surprise them. To systematise onboarding at Go2Market, we decided to focus on the following points:

Creating a team to handle the entire process from start to finish

Research on the onboarding experiences of current Go2Market employees

Updating our knowledge base with the onboarding project and all related information that will be useful for new employees

Ensuring that the knowledge base is light reading, written in an accessible and understandable way, without boredom and with positive energy in the background

Including a general part that will be the same for all departments

Appointing a Buddy who will oversee the new employee and ensure that their first days at our company are comfortable and in a good atmosphere

Showing our structures and how we operate at Go2Market, all step by step

Having new employees meet the entire Go2Market team, which will allow us to get to know each other better

Discussing with new employees after the onboarding process.

It’s not boring, right? Here, there is no time for boredom, and this form of onboarding has proven to be a hit! Our team consists of dedicated specialists full of passion not only for their work. We willingly share knowledge, support, pro tips, kind words, and smiles. We emphasise honesty, open communication, and caring for each other from the very first moments at Go2Market.

We don’t rest on our laurels

The new year also brings new challenges in the onboarding project. We don’t rest on our laurels; we set new goals and improvements. After each completed onboarding, we discuss with both new employees and the Buddy, asking for honest feedback about the advantages and disadvantages. We value every piece of feedback and are open to new ideas and suggestions. We are not afraid of change. We are working to enrich onboarding with any missing aspects, constantly developing our knowledge base and breaking the moulds of typical remote work. We prove that onboarding works well in the rhythm of home office. If you would like to participate in our onboarding process someday, follow our profile on LinkedIn.
