Amazon introduces a 1.5% surcharge to FBA and MCF in Europe - what does this mean for sellers?

3 Apr 2026

Last updated: 03.04.2026

Amazon has announced the introduction of a temporary 1.5% surcharge on fulfilment fees in Europe. The change applies to both FBA and partially to MCF, with the aim of partially recovering rising fuel and logistics costs.

For sellers, this is another update that should not be left for later. The rate itself does not look large, but with a larger scale of sales, it can noticeably affect the profitability of the entire portfolio.

When does the new Amazon surcharge take effect?

Amazon has announced that:

  • from 17 April 2026, the 1.5% surcharge will take effect in the FBA programme

  • from 2 May 2026, the surcharge will also cover the MCF service

For FBA, the change applies to: the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Belgium.

For MCF, the surcharge will cover: the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

What exactly is the new 1.5% surcharge?

It is a temporary fuel and inflation surcharge. Amazon indicates that the rise in fuel and transport prices has translated into higher operating costs across the entire industry. Until now, the company covered these expenses on its side, but has now decided to recover some of these costs through an additional fee added to order fulfilment.

In practice, this means that the cost of handling an order will be higher than before, and sellers should include this change in their margin calculations.

How is the Amazon surcharge calculated?

This is one of the most important pieces of information from a seller's perspective.

The surcharge will not be calculated based on the product's selling price. Amazon will add it to the fulfilment fee. This is an important distinction, because the impact of the change must be assessed not at the revenue level, but at the cost of fulfilment level.

According to Amazon, on average, the surcharge will be approximately:

  • EUR 0.05 per unit in the European Union

  • GBP 0.05 per unit in the United Kingdom

However, it is important to remember that the final amount may vary depending on the size and dimensions of the product.

How will the new surcharge affect sales profitability?

In many cases, the change will not look threatening when analysing a single item. The problem arises when we look more broadly - at the entire sales volume, cost structure, and margin in different product groups.

That is why it is worth analysing not just individual ASINs, but the entire portfolio. Products with lower margins, larger dimensions, or poorer cost efficiency may require a rapid response after this change.

It is usually worth checking:

  • which products have the smallest margin buffer

  • how large a share of costs is made up of fulfilment fees

  • whether the packaging method is raising costs more than it should

  • whether the current pricing policy still adds up after the change

This is why more and more companies are analysing sales results based on data - especially at the stage covered by the stages of sales management on Amazon.

What is worth doing on the seller account side?

Amazon announced that it has already updated the tools that allow assessing the impact of the new surcharge. These include:

  • Profitability Calculator

  • FBA Revenue Calculator

  • estimated fees and economics report

This is a good time to go through the data in an organised way and check three areas:

1. Product Profitability

First, it is worth seeing which products will feel the increase in fulfilment costs the most.

2. Dimensions and packaging

The surcharge depends on the product parameters, which is why the size and preparation method of the unit for shipment are of great importance here.

3. Performance of the entire portfolio

The best decisions do not come from looking at a single product, but from assessing the entire sales model.

In the case of more complex problems, it is worth considering support within one-off Amazon services.

Is the Amazon surcharge permanent?

At the moment, Amazon is communicating it as a temporary solution. At the same time, it notes that the amount of the surcharge will be constantly assessed in relation to market conditions.

This means that the situation may still change. All the more reason to treat this moment as a signal to tidy up profitability and operational costs.

What does this change mean for brands selling on Amazon?

For some companies, this will simply be another cost adjustment. For others - especially those operating on lower margins - it may be a moment to re-evaluate pricing policy, portfolio structure, and the profitability of selected products.

Such changes rarely overturn a business overnight. More often, they lower the result step by step if no one calculates them beforehand.

Therefore, instead of just looking at the percentage itself, it is better to answer a simpler question: how will this surcharge translate into the real result of our business?

Summary

From 17 April 2026, Amazon is introducing a 1.5% surcharge on FBA fees in selected European countries, including Poland. From 2 May 2026, the change will also cover MCF in some markets. The surcharge will be calculated based on the fulfilment fee, and not the product's selling price.

For sellers, this is a clear signal to recalculate profitability, check fees at the product level, and assess the impact of changes on the entire portfolio.
