Canadian marketplace Amazon.ca is piloting video-based verification of new sellers. During the account registration process, users are asked to give access to their computer’s camera. The system captures a 5-second recording of the account holder’s face. A copy of the recording is deposited with Amazon for future verification. This is one of the improvements Amazon has already announced to increase seller security. For now, it is not known whether this verification will only cover new accounts or also existing accounts and when it will be extended to the rest of the marketplaces. One thing is for sure, face recognition is no longer the domain of mobile devices and will soon also be widely used in e-commerce.
